A Sun Country Airlines flight bound for Mazatlán, Mexico, was diverted to El Paso International Airport, Texas, due to an alleged threat on board.

Flight SY593, operated by a Boeing 737-800, took off from Minneapolis-St. Paul with 150 passengers at 2:21 p.m. (local time).

However, shortly after takeoff, an unspecified security concern arose, prompting the crew to divert the flight to El Paso as a precautionary measure.

According to the airline, the plane landed safely in El Paso at 4:25 p.m. with no reported incidents.

The airline confirmed that the decision was made to protect the safety of passengers and crew in response to a potential onboard threat.

Initially, CBS News reported that a source close to the case indicated the discovery of a threatening note inside one of the airplane’s bathrooms.

This immediately triggered a response from local and federal authorities.

The FBI was notified and launched an investigation to determine the credibility of the threat, mobilizing resources to ensure security at the airport and among passengers.

However, after a detailed evaluation, the FBI’s El Paso office concluded that no credible threat was found, ruling out further concerns.

This allowed passengers to be temporarily accommodated while the investigation was completed and the aircraft was cleared.

Sun Country Airlines reaffirmed its commitment to safety and expressed its full cooperation with authorities during the investigation.

A company spokesperson emphasized the airline’s priority to minimize disruptions to affected passengers’ itineraries.

And to ensure the prompt resumption of normal operations.
